Sources close to President Zuma say the president wants ANCWL president Bathabile Dlamini to replace Pravin Gordhan as the minister of finance. Gordhan is seen by most Zuma loyalists as a rock between them and state coffers.
Minister Gordhan is embroiled in an ugly war with The Hawks over the SARS rogue unit. The Hawks said he was to be questioned about allegations related to his role in the formation and activities of the so-called “rogue unit” set up when he was head of the SA Revenue Service.
The minister snubbed the summon. “I do not intend to present myself for a warning statement for many considerations‚ both legal and given my other commitments. I remain committed to assist the Hawks in any bonafide investigation as stated in my statement‚” Gordhan said in a statement on Wednesday.
A source within ANCWL confirmed that Bathabile Dlamini was indeed likely to replace the experienced Gordhan. “President Bathabile Dlamini is one of the best and intelligent cdes of the movement. She has what it takes to run the treasury,” said the source on condition of anonymity.
Another source from the ANCWL told us there are also other plans to lobby for Dlamini to replace Jacob Zuma as the president of the ANC when they go to a national conference next year. If they succeed, Dlamini will be the first female president of the ANC.
Attempts to get comment from Dlamini and the presidency were unsuccessful.
