WITH Father’s Day just around the corner, most kids are drawing cute cards to surprise their dads on their special day.
But a 31-year-old stepfather from Richard’s Bay in KZN will not experience the joy of receiving a Father’s Day gift from his stepchild.
He got a hot klap from Richards Bay Regional Court on Friday for raping his 6-year-old stepdaughter.
After a series of court appearances, the man was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the crime took place in 2010 when the young girl’s mum left her in the man’s care.
“The accused raped the girl and told her not to report the matter to anyone.
“The case was only reported in 2012 when the victim’s mum noticed something suspicious about her daughter’s behaviour,” he said.
Zwane said a case of rape was opened at Richard’s Bay Police Station and transferred to Empangeni cop shop’s family violence unit.
“The accused was immediately arrested and charged with rape,” he said.
Acting provincial commissioner Major-General Bhekinkosi Langa praised the police for the hard work which led to the conviction of the accused.
Langa said: “The accused had responsibility for protecting his family from criminals, but instead he chose to rape his stepdaughter.”
