WHEN Maditaba Maitsi put her one-year-old baby girl to bed, she couldn’t imagine that the child would soon save her life.
The 48-year-old told reporters she was busy in the house on Tuesday 1 March when her husband of 25 years, Jacob Matlou (58), suddenly stormed into their house in Poortjie, south of Joburg.
“He didn’t even sit down . . . he demanded a beer from the fridge,” she said.
“I went to the kitchen to fetch the beer but Jacob was so loud he woke the baby.”
Maditaba went to the bedroom and picked up the baby and Jacob followed her.
“He told me to fetch another beer which I did,” said Maditaba.
“When I turned to give him his beer, he had a gun in his hand.
“I asked him what he was doing, but he didn’t reply, he just started shooting.”
Maditaba said he fired two shots and she fell to the ground, holding Gontse.
“After I fell down, I heard another gunshot. Jacob had shot himself,” she said.
Maditaba felt her body but she had not been hit.
Then she looked at her child and realised that Gontse had been struck by the bullets meant for her.
Gontse – who has since recovered – was grazed on her leg and a second bullet hit her buttocks and came out the other side.
“My little one was lying there crying with blood all over her body.
“I was very scared,” said Maditaba.
The baby was rushed to hospital where she spent a week.
Jacob died on the scene and he was buried on 12 March.
Orange Farm police spokesman Captain Johannes Motsiri confirmed the case.
“A case of attempted murder was opened at the police station.
“The case is still under investigation,” said Motsiri.
